The 5 Stages of Locs
If you’re considering locs or just starting the journey, be prepared for an adventurous ride. Each stage is unique, empowering and equally important. There are 5 stages of the loc process that need a little bit of maintenance and a whole lot of TLC: Starter, Budding, Teen, Mature and Rooted.
But, don’t worry our Master Locitcian is breaking it all down for you, one stage at a time.
STARTER
The first 3-6 months are also called the “baby stage”. Depending on your hair type you can start your locs with two strand twists, comb coils, braids or by palm rolling. There is so much flexibility during this stage because you can decide to have a specific parting grid or free form. But, make sure you schedule a consultation with an experienced Locitcian to make sure you start out right! Maintenance is easy in this stage: keep it clean, hydrated and just let them grow!
BUDDING
The budding stage comes with some frizz and puffiness between 6-12 months. Don’t worry about the little balls of hair that seem to be forming at the end of your locs - it’s all a part of the process. Your locs will start to matt together and are less likely to unravel. Just make sure you’re keeping your hair clean to avoid any build up so it stays healthy.
TEEN
During the teen stage it might seem like your locs are frizzier than before, but they’re actually stronger. Between 12-15 months your locs might even act like a typical teenager: moody! Some days you’ll see it all coming together and other days you’re yelling at the mirror: WTH! This is an incredible part of the development phase that needs a double dose of time and compassion. Stay connected with your Loctician to maintain your hair care regime and for lots of encouragement along the way.
MATURE
Depending on your hair texture, mature locs begin to form between 15-18 months. Your locs become firm enough to enjoy regular washes without reforming. You can enjoy that “wake, shake and go" lifestyle you’ve been waiting for. You won’t need to retighten your new growth as much because of the new strength and density of your lovely locs. Remember to keep your locs clean with a regular shampoo and hydration regime.
Rooted
Within 18-24 months your locs should be fully formed, defined, heavier and longer. If your locs become longer than you want, you can even trim it at this point. Even though you don’t need to retighten your new growth as often, make sure to schedule regular visits with your Loctician to keep your locs looking fresh and healthy. Feel free to experiment with different styles, but make sure to keep your locs clean and hydrated with low manipulation styles. Stay away from styles that excessively pull at your roots to avoid breakage. Remember: less is more!
